Objectives and Goals

The goal of our math curriculum is to provide students with the foundational skills needed to become proficient in math, while strengthening students’ comprehension levels. Students are introduced to higher order skills in mental math, critical thinking, and test preparation, as well as problem solving strategies.

Strategies

Math concepts are developed through interactive and visual learning activities. By using a consistent instructional approach, with stepped-out lessons, learners gain confidence and master mathematical skills and concepts more easily.

 Activities are designed to meet the individual needs of all students, and are provided for Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic and Tactile learners. Guided instruction offers step by step instruction, often using models and color to identify key ideas. The hands on lessons allow students to utilize concrete exploration with manipulatives or teacher demonstrations of a new skill or concept prior to the pictorial and symbolic presentation in the workbook. Scaffolding support helps children transition to working independently. Students are exposed to conceptual thinking through daily mathematical communication with oral and written exercises.

 Assessments

Formal assessments are given throughout the year to demonstrate a student’s mastery of content material, as well as retention of previous skills taught. These assessments may include chapter tests, performance assessments and cumulative reviews.  Informal assessments are completed through daily practice and reinforcement of skills, often through class discussions.
