STEM for All Grades
Reach for the Sky!
At the start of the 2025-26 academic year, Saint Bernadette School launched an in-house STEM Integration Program called Reach for the Sky, a three-year exploration in which teachers and students learn across disciplines and grade levels to articulate and apply the problem solving process. To facilitate this process, middle school and lower school faculty created large-scale themes around which grades and disciplines could coalesce: the middle school focused their projects on The STEM of a Cathedral while the lower grades engaged in projects involving Stars and Planets.
By creating these topic areas, faculty were able to contribute their expertise in developing projects, allowing students to experience the content through the lenses of different academic disciplines. Of note, while the acronym STEM calls out Science, Technology, Engineering and Math specifically, at the heart of Reach for the Sky is the shared understanding that all academic disciplines contribute to STEM projects: research, reading and writing cannot be separated from scientific inquiry; math and science are fundamental to the creation of art and music.
At the First Annual SBS Family Arts and STEM Night, over 600 guests visited exhibits that displayed the integration of all academic disciplines in projects that ranged from motorized constellations to stop-motion animation to interactive museum exhibits and even a large-scale cathedral that depicted stained glass windows. Each project incorporated some form of technology that assisted the functionality of the exhibit, whether it was original 3D designs printed to hold together portions of the cathedral or microprocessors that made physical computing possible.
Integrated learning takes time and planning, collaboration and risk-taking: having completed the first year of Reach for the Sky, Saint Bernadette School is poised to lead the way in creating substantive, cross-curricular learning experiences in which students iterate and problem-solve, preparing its students to create solutions for the challenges of the future.

St. Bernadette School’s First Annual Family STEM/Arts Night in 2026 was a beautiful celebration of creativity, innovation, and cross-curricular learning that brought together students, families, faculty, and staff for an unforgettable evening. Each grade showcased how STEM and the arts can work hand in hand to deepen learning and inspire curiosity.
Guests explored hands-on exhibits featuring beautiful artwork displayed throughout our hallways and inspiring examples of cross-curricular STEM learning including Grade 1 Mars Rovers and a Mars Arena, a Grade 2 Planetarium, Grade 3 Constellations and 3D Pen demonstrations, and Grade 4 Stop Motion Animation. Upper grades demonstrated remarkable creativity and critical thinking through projects like Grade 5 Cathedral Models, Pixel Art, and Saint Projects, Grade 6 Interactive Maps and an Interactive Organ, Grade 7 Cathedral Blueprints, Cross Models, Water Pumps, and Stained Glass Windows, and Grade 8 Tessellation Examples, Gargoyles, and the incredible SBS Cathedral display.
Throughout the evening, students beautifully connected science, engineering, mathematics, history, design, faith, and artistic expression, showing how learning can extend far beyond the traditional classroom. It was inspiring to see families walk through each exhibit, engage with student work, and witness firsthand the collaboration, imagination, and problem-solving skills our students brought to life.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mrs. Valerie DeAngelis, Ms. Lien, and all of our outstanding faculty, staff, and students whose vision, dedication, and hard work made this truly special evening possible. Their commitment created a meaningful experience that highlighted the creativity and excellence that make St. Bernadette School such a remarkable community.
