The students have worked hard this year in math, building skills and mastering new information. Although we recognize the need for a break from the routines of everyday classes, studies indicate that children may lose as many as three months instructionally during the summer break. We are offering Summer Math Skills Sharpener to help students maintain their math skills so they may begin the 2021 – 2022 school year with confidence.
Summer Math Skills Sharpener provides the necessary review and practice that allows students to retain important math skills over the summer break. It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three to four times per week over the summer break, using a strategy known as interleaved practice. Interleaving requires students to systematically re-visit and practice material that has already been mastered. We believe this is the best type of practice that ensures long-term retention. By spacing the lessons over a nine-week period, students are able to return to school in the fall, having remembered what they were taught in previous years and ready to begin learning new material right away.
We have ordered copies of Summer Math Skills Sharpener for students currently in Kindergarten-Gr. 7. While the program is not required, families are strongly encouraged to consider purchasing a workbook for their students to complete. You would order the workbook in the grade your student just completed, i.e. for a student entering First Grade you would order the Kindergarten Book, entering Second Grade would order the First Grade book.
