| This academic year will be a very special and challenging time in your child’s life. He or she will be developing in many different ways. Growth in academic skills, organizational skills, spiritual beliefs, self- confidence and responsibility will be our primary focus.
In Science, we have been working with our new and exciting (STEP) “Science Through Experiments Program.” We have completed the units on friction and levers and will start electricity soon. From the level of enthusiasm, students were learning and having fun doing all the “hands on experiments.” When we complete the STEP program, we will have a Parents’ Night to demonstrate what we have learned. In addition, we will be studying the solar system and doing related activities with the Jason Project.
In Math, we are starting our unit on fractions. The students will be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. We will be using various methods and manipulatives to help the students achieve success. The students are also creating and designing their own Math games using their skills and knowledge.
We have started reviewing the parts of speech in Language Arts. The children will learn how to spell, define, and properly use new vocabulary in sentences and paragraph writing. Cursive penmanship will be reviewed and used for all writing assignments.
Social Studies- Students are working in Unit 3, “Our Colonial Heritage.” They will learn about the Spanish, French, and British colonists who settled in North America and made it their home. To better understand colonial life for a child their age, students will be working on a compare/contrast project to conclude this unit of study.
Reading- Students are working in Theme 3, “Looking Below the Surface.” In this theme students are sharpening their powers of observation and investigation by looking at various ways people unveil mysteries. The following will be covered: predicting outcomes, inferences, summarizing, drawing conclusions, main idea, details, sequence, cause/effect, and making judgments.
Students are also working on reading projects. Students have chosen a book to read from the Massachusetts Children’s Award List and will be creating a Prism Project to be presented in February.
